Elon Musk‘s satellite internet network is celebrating 1,800 satellites in orbit. We reveal the 5 keys to Starlink.

1. Objective

Its main objective is to bring high-speed Internet to every corner of the world through a mega constellation of satellites.

2. Antecedents

This is the first time such a goal has been attempted on such a large scale. This requires a large number of satellites, 42,000 to be precise.

Currently, the Starlink constellation consists of almost 1,800 satellites.

3. Operation

The orbit chosen is about 440 kilometres above the Earth. The network aims to propagate electromagnetic waves through the vacuum to achieve higher speeds than any terrestrial fibre-optic connection. Starlink satellites are 60 times closer to Earth than traditional satellites, resulting in lower latency and the ability to provide services that are generally not possible with traditional satellite internet.

4. Current situation

100,000 terminals have been shipped to connect their customers to Starlink satellites travelling in Earth orbit. So far, they have deployed this business in 14 regions since launching the first satellites into space two years ago.

5. Price of the service

499 euros is the initial price the customer must pay to receive the hardware to connect to the satellite constellation. The kit includes a circular antenna with tripod, a router and the necessary cabling.

After that, it is necessary to pay 60 euros for delivery and then 99 euros per month for the connection.

These are the 5 keys to Starlink, but you should know that this service is ideally suited to areas of the world where connectivity has always been a challenge. Without the limits of traditional terrestrial infrastructure, Starlink can deliver high-speed broadband internet to locations where access has been unreliable or not fully available.
